Give Environmentally Friendly Presents

We’re often perplexed about what to give a friend or family member for birthdays and holidays. Here are fourteen suggestions for gifts that won’t harm the environment:

  • Membership in an environmental or conservation organization such as Greenpeace, the National Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy, or the World Wildlife Fund. There are many others. Their catalogs contain numerous gift items, including T-shirts, calendars, tote bags, games, and toys. Proceeds from the sale of these items help fund the organizations’ projects.
  • Membership in a museum.
  • Tickets to a movie, play, musical, or sporting event.
  • A service that you perform yourself, such as babysitting, cleaning the car, putting up storm windows, cooking, or addressing holiday greeting cards.
  • A book such as 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Earth, Save Our Planet, Shopping for a Better World, or The Green Consumer.
  • A yard composter that you build or buy.
  • A house plant, shrub, or tree.
  • Brazil nuts, cashews, other tropical nuts or candy made from them.
  • Stationery, birthday and holiday greeting cards, notepads, or wrapping paper made from recycled paper.
  • A stuffed fabric “snake” to keep drafts from blowing under the door.
  • An aluminum can crusher, which turns aluminum cans in to flat discs that can be easily stored until they until they can be recycled.
  • A microwave popcorn popper, which eliminates the wasteful packaging that comes with individual popcorn packs.
  • An electrical or solar-powered battery charger.
  • A solar-powered calculation, radio, watch, flashlight, or lantern. For the biker or jogger, a solar-powered light to strap on the arm or leg.
